Mounting a bar valve

Print PDF

Mounting a bar valve is bread and butter work for most installers. And if you haven’t already fitted your first bar valve, the chances are you soon will. However, whilst the task is undoubtedly run-of-the-mill, it’s not always a straightforward one.  Potential trouble spots include damage to pipework and tiling. So what can be done to make the job easier?

One solution would be to use a fixing kit. Thanks to the popularity of bar valves, there’s plenty of kits to choose from, but don’t make the mistake of thinking they’re all the same, or thereabouts. Essential features to keep in mind when choosing a fixing kit include the amount of positioning flexibility the kit offers, standard ¾” BSP inlet connections and whether the kit will allow you to make a neat job of concealing the valve’s threads. In short, is the kit going to save you time, whilst helping you to minimise any possible damage?

Let’s look at how using the right sort of fixing kit can help with a typical bar valve installation.

Position (1)

Look for diagonal fixing points that will reduce the risk of piercing the pipework.  This is especially important if someone else has installed the pipework – and you’re following up with the valve fix.

Secure (2)

Slotted fixing points will ensure a degree of adjustment can be made – again, essential if you’re simply ‘finishing’ the job off.  Look for secondary, round fixing points that will allow you to securely fix the valve once you are happy with its positioning.

Here’s where a bit of design detail comes in.  This bar valve fixing kit from Aqualisa has chunky spanner flats – making getting a grip easy – whilst avoiding the need to tighten against the fixing screws – one of the best ways to wreak damage on tiling and bathroom décor!

Another clever design feature to look out for – cover plates that conceal the threads between the bar valve and the mounting.  Essential for a professional finish and a happy customer!
